If I am on a long trip I take a spare fuel pump assembly and tools. Since over the years, I have done 6 or 7 fuel pumps, I can change one out in about 10 minutes. If you have never done one, the side of the road would be a little harder. Still having one on hand would allow any mechanic or garage to change the fuel pump easily, but almost no one will have one available for a couple days and most shops will charge $600 or so for the pump plus labor. A fuel pump usually fails by not starting the car when it goes out but not always. The cars I have replaced fuel pumps on, 5 refused to start after being parked, one died while being driven. My limited experience has shown fuel pumps and crank position sensors are most likely to leave you stranded on the side of the road. Not sure if real Saab mechanics would agree.
