P0455 Code and Temp Gauge Drops

Hello. I read as many P0455 and Low Temp Gauge threads before posting but didn't see any matches for my situation. 2000 9-5 V6. P0455 comes and goes but is almost always tied to a sudden drop in engine temperature on the gauge. Full cabin heat is still there even when temp gauge drops down to 1/8 level or to the pin. Normally runs at 1/2 level under most conditions. If temp gauge ever drops to the needle stop, the A/C clutch disengages (like Econ mode). I presume this is an ECU decision. Nothing I try to do (quick key on/off, a/c on/off, etc.) shy of just waiting or stopping the car for long periods of key-off makes the temp come back up even though HVAC will blow hot air, engine hoses are all hot, etc. Thermostat & housing was replaced years ago during some other maintenance. This existed before/after the housing was replaced. None of the normal P0455 diagnostics has turned up any culprits. This has gone on for many years. I've installed a new gas cap, reverted to the old, and back to new and the problem persists.
The one common thread I see is this is seasonally tied to either A/C on or Defrost on. I cant think of a single time when temp gauge drops to low in the spring or fall when A/C or Defrost is not on. Any thoughts? Any connections between perceived ECU temp drop and P0455? I have never been able to check Ohm reading of the temp sensor when this actually happens. Maybe a real time OBDII reader/program would give me sensor value?
Thank you in advance!!
