The problem can be the connector. You can remove the sensor connector, inspect and re-seat it. Many replace the thermostat and senor at the same time when one acts up or as preventative maintenance. Can sometimes is done when replacing the heater bypass valve. For a vehicle as old as yours, you could to all three if no history of some components already replaced.
