Ignition Switch Installation Posted by Doug W [Email] (#2371) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Doug W) on Sat, 19 Sep 2015 20:41:45 In Reply to: Re: Blank Dash and Codes, Bernie [Profile/Gallery] , Thu, 17 Sep 2015 19:38:01 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The mailman woke me up this morning with a box from Euro and in it was a new ignition switch. "Your parts fast" - indeed. I installed it today. It's pretty tedious as the entire center console has to come out. Lots of T20 torx screws. The plastic bits require some patience.
Here's what I learned:
The WIS is WAY too involved. All that's required is to free up the Aluminum Selector housing from the tunnel enough to rotate the bottom of the housing toward the passenger seat. This gives enough clearance to access the switch. No need to remove the shift cable from the housing. It's also unnecessary to remove the lock cylinder as stated in the WIS. I took off the L shaped bracket at the front of the housing held on by three sheet metal screws to allow more rotation and better access to the switch. Both seats need to be ALL the way back when manipulating the housing.
The Haynes manual does not mention the transmitter held inside the back of the console on '05 and up cars. Not sure what it's for but it sure surprised me.
Many thanks to Bernie for the advice with this job. The car works great now. No more blacked out dash at start-up and no more oddball, seemingly unrelated codes.
FWIW the switch I pulled from the car had lubricant in it. The new one is dry. One thing I've heard - do NOT but WD40 in the ignition lock cylinder. I think the lube on my switch may have been HHS 2000 put in by me: Duh-Oh!
