Don, thanks. I followed most of your suggestions, but decided to remove the rotor and caliper anyway to make more room. I then borrowed a 5 lb slide hammer (OEM #327033) with a FWD axle puller attachment (OEM #27058) from AutoZone, to free the passenger half axle's companion flange/spline from the intermediate shaft. (The drift/hammer method just didn't work for me.) It must have taken me about twenty sliding blows before it broke loose! Following removal, the outer CV joint decided it wanted to pop a leak, too. Oh joy...
