Wheel Bearing Friction - Drag Torque Posted by DnstrDan [Email] (#1361) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DnstrDan) on Wed, 7 Oct 2015 08:46:16 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Does anyone know (in a qualitative sense) what the bearing friction should be for the front and rear wheel hubs? In my case, there are no abnormal symptoms (no noise, no clunking or vibrations). For example, with the tire, rotor and driveshaft removed from the front right hub, I only get a quarter revolution if I hand spin it. Seems to me that reduced drag torque would be a factor that would improve fuel efficiency. (My car is a '99 SE with 175,xxx mi. and the bearings have never been changed. I currently have the entire front end apart for overhaul.)
Without devolving into the various engineering factors that come in to play under real-world conditions (e.g., suspended load, wheel speed, lateral loading, grease viscosity, etc.), does anyone have a seat of the pants method for assessing whether a wheel bearing should be changed out, absent obvious faults? Do folks proactively change wheel bearings, or reactively only after ride quality is degraded?
