Cracking trim around tailgate door

I have this problem on one wagon. I thought perhaps someone broke it doing service. Now the issue is happening on another wagon. Is it just age or is something causing these to crack? The cracks start from the covered bolt hole along the D pillar. Perhaps when the hatch lift supports get weak, the door slams and the trim cracks. Or this is the wagon version of flexing car C pillar paint cracks on the sedan.
I think this is part numbers 4915781 and 4915773, both labeled 40 in the image. There are supposedly ~$40 per side, but who knows if these are even in the US.
My main concern is water and dirt buildup behind these causing rust or problems with drainage. I can't tell to what extend that is an issue. In theory, I suppose these could just be removed? Or do they serve some purpose beyond aesthetics? They could potentially be reinforced with something behind them such as fiberglass. Anyone try that?
Are these plastic bits an issue on all newer cars or have some brands engineered out such issues. It's getting tough to keep cars much beyond 20 years from production.
