It is not as either / or as you would think, especially if putting them in as a DIY mechanic who only sees this once or twice in a car's lifetime.
You will probably get some other opinions on this too. I have found them 'finicky'. First one I ever did was dead easy. Second one was very hard to seat properly, even though I made sure the old O-ring was out. I had to put a block of wood in place a pop it in.
When I did the most recent one (my 4th) I left off the heat shield, seated it, screwed tight, visually checked the hold down tab was hard up against the block, and then I took the screw back out and put the heat shield in place. It is possible to get it cocked so that it is not close enough to the inductor to get good pulses.
