I've installed a lot of different brand brake pads on a variety of cars and trucks. Except for performance driving (i.e. racing), my opinion, for what it's worth, is to just stay away from the cheapest brand. Also, whenever I've had "poor" braking performance as you've described, it usually the result of not changing pads and rotors.
What ever course of action you decide, when you're finished, you should take the car for a test drive and do some serious braking, short of locking the brakes to make sure that they stop on a dime and give you 9 cents back.
I replaced the brakes on my 9-5 Aero wagon, the pads were slightly under $50 and the rotors where everyday drivers. I drive conservatively and have found braking to be excellent. When pricing these puppies, I found some brands pushing several hundreds of dollars. Can't say whether that's worth it or not. If you have a lot of money to throw around, then the very expensive ones may make your day.
Just make sure after you're done to take a test drive.
