Ok, I did a dumb thing today. I was changing the front oil pump cover o-ring and crank seal, which I accomplished, but after I re-installed the monster pump cover snap ring, I noticed that it wasn't seated all the way into the top groove on the timing cover. So I took a long brass drift pin and gave it a little tap to push it up, but no help. I can just see all of you grimacing now... (Not a huge tap, and only an 8 oz. ball peen.) So I tapped on the rear snap ring end (from the front), and it helped a little. Thinking I was making progress, I got an even longer drift and tapped the front snap ring end, (from the rear). I was not tapping with much force, just little "love" taps. And, you guessed it, on the second tap the front lower retaining groove tab on the timing cover broke off. I know, I shoulda saw it coming! Pretty dumb. So my question is... will the cover and snap ring hold in place with only four tabs remaining? Or is impending disaster looming? I've accomplished several timing chain replacement jobs on my other cars in the family fleet, so I'm very familiar with the work involved in changing the cover. But I'd really like to avoid it on this car, and here's why: it's a '00 9-5 base, B235 with 234K on the odometer. We use it a back-up beater second car, with occasional long trips. The car runs great; I've done almost all the common 9-3/9-5 repairs to this car, from the blend door, the oil pan clean out, pcv upgrade, to an entire cooling system replacement. Except of course for the dreaded timing chain job. Unfortunately I just bought a fresh set of expensive Michelins, hoping to get another 40-50K out of it, then park or part it out unless something catastrophic happened. I hope this wasn't it! Any thoughts or opinions are welcome. And some abuse I guess, I deserve it! This really sucks because I usually go through great pains to accomplish my maintenance on these cars meticulously, researching everything beforehand, etc. But I've done this particular job so many times I guess I got complacent. 2nd time for this car btw. Thanks guys, I appreciate your input!
