Nope, the pliers worked just fine, and the ring was compressed enough, it just still had quite a gap between the edge of the ring and the inside of the groove. I've done this job about seven or eight times now, and this was the first time I've seen this gap. In retrospect I should've just left it alone. I was worried about the ring not being seated correctly, now I have an entire missing retainer! If you haven't done this job, it's very easy, but I highly recommend the 16" snap ring pliers. I did this job one time, actually my first time many years ago without them, and it was a bear!
