I think the adjustment may be in the pulley and how it sits on the alternator shaft, not the alternator in the bracket, unless something is badly put together. Maybe someone else can confirm this ??
As far as I know, the early brackets only need a little material 'relieved' to fit the later style alternators and they are otherwise nearly identical (so later year brackets fit on earlier cars). eEuro shows same part number for 1999 and 2006.
So if there's an issue it may be how the pulley is pressed onto the alternator shaft. I was fortunate that the rebuilt unit I purchased had the correct pulley and it was an exact match to the unit I removed (and I then refurbished that one for car #2).
