How old is your belt tensioner? I assume you have a 2.3L? Common the tensioner wears out and allows the belt to hang off the edge, nothing to do with the alternator. Drive belt may have been hanging off prior but only drew your attention once the alt died/replaced. Fit a new tensioner and perhaps a new idler for good measure (which I sell on most alternator replacements as they both have to be removed anyway).
