I agree that its moisture intrusion causing corrosion. But there is also the effect of corrosive gas venting from the battery. adhesive lined heat shrink is effective against both.
I'd say that battery cables on a boat are under a lot more attack by corrosion than those in a car. A proper crimp followed up with adhesive backed shrink is the best defense. It is not a "marine standard" but it's definitely a "best practice".
I don't think you'll be able to add heat shrink after the fact ... I suspect that if you can find any large enough to pass over the terminal, it wont shrink enough to make a good seal.
