I think the head unit is just a tuner with a preamp.. so the output is a low level signal.. and could not drive the speakers without the external amp.. To make matters more complicated.. it doesn't use a conventional grounding system.. rather a balance signal...
So your only options would be to either try swapping in another amp of same model/specs.. or looking up the wiring from the head unit.. and try reversing the right and left feeds into the amp. to see if the problem lies with the amp vs the head unit..
