Simply put, the 9-5 engine is built on the same bottom end as the 1972 2.0 Swedish built 99 motor, but runs a lot hotter. For the first turbocharged variants, the oil specification was 10W-30, with oil coolers set to around 160F and the water thermostat at 180F. Moving forward to the 9-5, oil cooler temperature setting is now 220F and water thermostat setting is 190F. At those temperatures, 40 weight oil is hardly the equal of the original design specification at operating temperature. On the plus side, synthetic oil, not commonly used in automobiles back in the '70s and '80s, holds its viscosity in high shear conditions (read in the bearings) than conventional multi-grade oil.
Remember that oil selection is tied to design conditions. Engines with tighter bearing clearance need lower viscosity oil to lubricate properly. In engines with looser clearance lower viscosity oil will not build the proper pressures.
15W-50 is a little bit on the thick side; personally I'd use 5W-40 or 10W-40, but I wouldn't call 15W-50 wrong in hot climates.
