Thanks for your great responses. I had been over some of the territory. I had seen the brass ebay things. None of the photos showed the inside of the thing until I stumbled on some instructions that said first cut off the little ball on the link arm, then apply some Loctite (presumably super glue). I was hoping to learn of SAABnet experience with that. I also found that there are three Dorman numbers that respond to transmission linkage, 14055, 14057, and 14041. My local Oreillys had 14041. With my Dremel, I sanded the outside of the closest fit item to jam snugly into the cable end. The hole in the middle is 6.3mm and the link ball is 6mm. Not perfect but it fit well. Adding Anders's beautiful bracket will prevent lift off. Thanks, Anders.
I also found and purchased UP1KIT from bushingfixdotcom. It looks like the perfect solution, due to arrive Wednesday, a little close to our Thursday departure for a 5k mile off-Interstate tour of the east. It will go in the spares box (half of the trunk-spare starter, alternator, belt, DIC, copper sealing rings, o-rings, etc.)
Now to fabricate Anders cover bracket...
