Steve...
...there's really not much wiggle room between the wheel locking vs spinning freely, so don't overthink this. Just tighten the star wheel until it locks up.. and throw the tire back on the hub to get better leverage to ensure its really locking up .. THen back off a notch or two, and retest with the tire back on again.. If you back it off too much.. the brake will engage.. but the car will roll when parked on a hill.. so that's a great test..
I had a hard time using the star adjuster the first time as well.. which is why a bent screwdriver could be useful.. But honestly.. you just need the right sized flathead.. and angle it in correctly .. Use a smallflashlight (like on a cellphone) to peak in there so you know exactly where the adjuster is.. and remember.. they work in opposite directions for each side..to tighten..
The cable itself wont apply any force to the shoes until it starts clicking, i believe.. that's why they tell you 3-4 clicks.. .so as long as the cable is not applying any force when you start the star adjustment, you should be fine.. THen after you adjust both wheels.. you go back and tighten up the cable from under the center console.. I think it's 10mm as i stated in my prior note.. but it may be larger.. It's easy to spot.. IT's been a while. not sure if i needed a deep socket to fit over it or note..
good luck
Mike
