Thank you for the valuable suggestion! I removed it, cleaned it lacquer thinner and spray contact cleaner, lubed it with graphite and silicon lube, reassembled and works like new.
The only PITA thing was getting the right tool and angle on the latching paw.
Tried all sorts of hex keys, finally got a stout coat hanger, bent it, and that did the trick.
