New Key/Cylinder... Need to mate with Computer?

Hi folks,
The ignition lock/cylinder on my '06 9-5 is locked in the "off" position, but the car still thinks it's "on". Won't turn at all. Cylinder won't come out, as it won't turn. I'm thinking to drill out the existing cylinder... The "push in the catch through the hole" method won't work unless the key turns.
I just pulled a cylinder from the 99 (or maybe 2000?) 9-5 parts car I have. I know I need to pull the key transponder/FOB receiver (or whatever it's called) and use this with the new cylinder/switch. This part is identical looking on the 00 vs the 06.
My question is this - Do I need to "mate" this new transponder to the 9-5's computer system? Or, will it work as long as I have the "new" transponder/receiver that matches the key/FOB?
The car has already had the cylinder/switch replaced once with an older style key by a previous owner.
I'm trying to avoid having the car towed to a mechanic.
Thanks in advance.
David C.
