My theory as to why owning and wrenching 9-5s is good

There's a sufficient supply of most of the components that will fail over time, and inexpensive at that;
Provided you're a decent driver and know when to simply get off the road, they're quite safe in the event of a collision or road mishap;
Repairs and maintenance are relatively simple and intuitive, next to many other designs of cars;
Having already lost virtually all their retained value, there's nothing to lose (other than gasoline, tires used up) in going out and putting 40,000 miles on it in one year - buy a new vehicle and you're handcuffed, since all use costs you depreciation;
There's no manufacturer to lie to you about emissions or crashworthiness performance;
You can park a 9-5 is some extremely remote locations and return in 72 hours and you mainly worry about porcupines eating your coolant holes and whatnot - park a Volvo or BMW back up in there and someone with a reversed baseball hat will not be able to resist vandalizing it and if you put a Tacoma 4x4 pickup back in there, they'll simply steal that;
When something does go wrong and requires attention, the work you do will force you to solve problems and make full use of both your mind and your knowledge of tools and your ability to turn wrenches - this keeps your brain from turning to chocolate pudding;
You aren't going to threaten other drivers and create emnity or a sense of rivalry driving a 9-5 - a major contributing factor in road rage events;
Are these new vehicles really stirring your soul? Some think "the party is over" but I've stayed around when I met truly interesting people and had a better time once many of the easily spooked guests had left.
You're not under any obligation to go anywhere. It isn't like it used to be, when newer cars were vastly better in important ways.
