CAUTION!! - Faulty ATF Fill Plugs Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sat, 17 Jun 2017 08:23:36 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
No, this isn't the typical "I stripped the teeth in the ATF fill plug and now I can't remove it" message. I have stripped the teeth and still been able to remove the plug twice after spending ~$20 buying inexpensive brand versions of the right tools to do the job.
No, this is more frustrating.
I ordered a replacement ATF fill plug approximately 18 months ago because my factory plug had accumulated damage during its previous removals, by both a Saab Tech and by me. The plug was advertised as being OEM Saab, not a Pro-Parts or other off brand piece.
Today was the first ATF change since I bought the plug so I planned to install it and save the old plug 'just because'. I tried to fit the new plug in the threaded transmission case opening, you have to do this blind, for a few minutes with no success. I then did a side-by-side comparison to the old plug and was shocked to discover the replacement part was 2mm to 3mm larger in diameter!
I have contacted the seller to see if they will exchange the part, even though the purchase was 18 moths ago. eEuro has always stood by their parts previously so this may not be hopeless - and the part is under $7 if they say it has been too long.
Cautionary conclusion - IF you also purchased a replacement ATF fill plug approximately 18 months ago, verify the new plug's size against the old plug you removed before tossing the old plug in the scrap metal bin!
