It came with synthetic fluid. Most common was a Castrol (BP?) synthetic (BF 108?). Seemingly unubtanium except from either Saab or GM. Later models came with a different synthetic that was supposed to be better, and earlier models with the same basic 5-speed had what was called SaabSyntheticStuff. I don't think any 9-5s came with SSS, but I could be wrong on that.
You didn't mention what fluid you are changing to. A lot of people used RedLine MTL (MTF?) back in the days when Saab was recommending 10W30 engine oil for transmissions. While the RedLine seemed to work just fine, it did have a nasty habit of running out the seals. I don't know that cars using RedLine were more likely to leak, but I do know that when they leaked, it all came out in a hurry.
I had attempted to use RedLine, but for one reason or another I was always running about 2/3 RedLine and 1/3 engine oil. The result was very slick shifting (on a 9000), and it never did leak, at least not until the subsequent owner's wife hydrolocked the engine by trying to ford a flooded street. It had about 130K and 8-19 years on the clock.
