I made a grievous mistake. I believed that the shape of the cap was that of a watch hat or skull cap, not a derby. the edge of the brim was covered with a thin layer of rust that blended into the hub. I realized my mistake when prying through the hole I made and the brim separated from the hub.
Then I proceeded to remove the axle per WIS rather than the Saabnet instructions with no problem.
A problem arose when I started to take apart the joint. WIS said "Remove the plate edge and lift off the tripod housing." After looking and trying to figure this out, I finally decided that the plate edge was a rather permanent looking part and hacksawed it off. That took an hour. The two SaabNet instruction sets did not mention the plate edge.

They apparently were not the first to replace those boots.
I imagine that SAAB mechanics carry the axle to a grinder and pop off the plate edge with cleverly placed grinds. I am old and weak and the axles are young and heavy and my grinder is down in the basement. Easier to hold the axle down and saw that to hold it up and grind.
