To be clear -- what Mark means that for an alignment the car is on a drive on rack (i.e., the weight of the car is indeed on the wheels like its on the ground), so there should be no difference up on the alignment rack versus on the ground.
If your wheels are (were) that bent, then it is quite likely that you have something bent or broken that is preventing a clear alignment.
Many years ago, I swerved at 40 mph to avoid a dog that ran into the street and bounced the front right off a curb. Had to replace the strut assembly to get it back in line (and get rid of a clunk).
As suggested, get it to a good alignment shop (not a tire chain that does alignments, but a real alignment specialist) and at least get a good diagnosis, even if you want to DIY any work. Its silly to guess and throw parts at it, especially given how challenging suspension work can be on older cars.
