It could be more than one thing of course but...
As for the sputtering part I would suggest you look at every inch of EVERY vacuum line including the brake booster hose and such.
Replace them all. It's cheap and may well do it.
My brake booster line and the oil trap hose with the check valve had apparently been bad for a while, given some stuttering my car was having up hills etc.
Of course I was stupidly guessing at the more expensive stuff.
Neither was obvious until each forced the issue and broke off.
Fixed them both and now she is running really like a gem. $75 or so well spent.
It may not be the problem but worth a good checking. Good luck.
Oh and tell those folks about this board. Hope they keep their car going.
