New valve cover gasket leaks....how to fix?

Hi I have a 2004 9-5 Arc.
I just replace the valve cover gasket with a elring one from eeuroparts. I used the dental floss trick…worked like a charm to hold the gasket in place while putting it on the engine.
Took it for a 40 min test drive and much to my dismay, there was a small amount of oil at the bottom of the half-moon indentation on the RHS of the engine (when looking at it from the front of the car).
Well this annoyed me as I was meticulas in cleaning the metal faces of the cover and engine block, and making sure the gasket was seated as good as possible.
I did not use gasket compound of any type, so the question is, should I have? What can I do now to fix the problem??? (will removing, cleaning, and using some sort of sealant work?)
Also, I viewed and read a few ‘how to’ threads and neither the use of gasket sealants or valve cover tightening sequence was mentioned.
If found later in another thread an excerpt from WIS about a sequence.
So, a related question, what damage could I have done not following the sequence? And if I go back and loosen them, then retighten in the proper sequence, will that make things ‘better’?
Thanks
J
