It really does "just work" for most garage door openers, but they do have issues with some newer models. I had to find some more generic instructions from Homelink themselves on how to program mine for my rolling code garage door opener, which isn't particularly new or fancy, but does add another step to programming it. I think I had to reset the mirror, press a button on it, run over to the garage door opener and press a button on the back of it, and then run back to the car to press the mirror's button again. There are some newer garage door openers that just flat-out don't work without a special adapter box that Homelink will sell you. I believe that that box hooks up to the wall opener terminals on a garage door opener and adds an older rolling code interface to it.
