Engine races to 3000 rpm on cold start Posted by Bill B [Email] (#1884) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill B) on Thu, 9 Nov 2017 11:34:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I replaced the throttle body on my 2001 base 4cyl with 165K with the throttle body from my '99 SE parts car which had 50K. That solved all previous problems. Engine runs great - smooth, fast, responsive, no codes - but has two new issues. On startup when cold, first start of the day, engine races to 3000 rpm for ten seconds then slows down to about 1000, which seems to be the new idle speed.
A due diligence search found only one similar complaint, from Ian Macadie in 2010, link below. His post got no answers, so I pose it again. Along the research way I found one suggestion for a totally different problem "It's only about $300 and nobody ever complained that a car ran worse with a new throttle body."
On hot starts, there is no racing, and on starts after sitting for three or four hours or so, the engine revs to about 1500 or 2000 rpm. The idle is always about 1000 rpm, whereas it had always been around 900 or lower. Other Saabnet commenters suggested idle speed can only be adjusted with a Tech 2. The nearest Saab shops are in San Antonio, Austin, and Houston, between 300 and 350 miles from home.
Do I need a throttle body or a visit to Houston? I'm going there anyway for Thanksgiving week.
Finally, while the engine races up to 3000, a cloud of blue smoke leaves the tailpipe. The car burns no oil, or by the time it needs a quart, it is between 5 and 7 thousand miles and gets an oil change, Mobil1 0W-40, and a PT Cruiser Fram Tough Guard (learned from Saabnet). The blue smoke probably has to do with wiping oil off the cylinder walls, but I do not like it.
