The shields are quite important:
1. It directs cooling air to the 3 radiator + oil cooler. It stops the air flow from going below the radiators
2. As mentioned Keeps water out of the belt and engine
3 there is a separate shield in the wheel well that keeps the serpentine belt dry, and isolated from the oil cooler lines.....if the belt starts to shred it keeps the belt from cutting through the oil cooler hoses below the belt
