Occasional Coolant Smell when adjusting temp knob

Looking for suggestions here. Just picked up an 06 9-5 wagon. 90% solid but getting ready to dig into two issues:
Noted a slight coolant smell when adjusting the temp knobs up for heat. Seems to appear then disapate after a few min.
Second is the AC compressor is not turning on. Had a shop add correct amount of freon but still no action. I realize this could be a lot of things, but any common issues?
BTW the car has 185K. Thanks in advance
