I just went through the same thing after fixing the motors on both of my 9-5s. One had a broken arm, stripped gears, and a blown motor diode, so it actually displayed an error code on the ACC panel and made no noise whatsoever. The other car had a broken arm, broken internal stops, and stripped gears, so that car's motor would run and run when the car was turned off, and made awful grinding noises. I lucked into a dirt cheap nearly new recirculate motor on eBay for one car, and pieced together a second from my car's two motors and another from Pick-n-Pull, plus a new arm from the dealer. I've yet to run across a junked car with an arm that hasn't snapped in two. As was previously mentioned, there's no way to tell exactly what's wrong with your particular motor without removing the glove compartment.
