Usually caused by a malfunctioning air mass meter, they under report air mass and consequently the engine runs lean, increasing piston crown temperature. The pistons are cooled by the oil jet at the bottom of the bore, but if you have crappy oil and low oil pressure #4 oil jet is the last in line to get any oil. Usually a bad air mass meter causes broken piston tops from detonation.
Scoring and scuffing on the piston skirt is caused by overheated piston.
If you look at the pictures of the engine bearings this car ran terrible oil quality.
Air mass meters are much cheaper than a new motor.
