Throttle Body Issues Posted by Chip Fichot [Email] (#2597) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Chip Fichot) on Fri, 9 Jul 2021 08:03:20 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
So I finally got my car into the (non-Saab specialist) shop that I had found (see my other posts about that) and one of the main things I wanted addressed was a minor oil leak that has been present for at least a year. Small drops on the driveway, but not enough of a leak to require oil being added, ever (keeping in mind I've put maybe 1K on the car in the past year). I noticed oil coming from above the oil pan when I last did an oil change in October so I thought it might be the oil pressure sending unit or maybe the oil pan gasket.
The tech called me from the shop and asked if the throttle body had ever been replaced and I have no record of that prior to my ownership and it wasn't done since I've owned it. So, he said that the throttle body was leaking oil and that one of the spring tension clamps on one of the hoses was not replaced correctly - it was in a position where it would have needed to be to remove the hose and wasn't put back in place where it should have been, so the TB was clearly removed at some point. He also felt that the bolts likely weren't tightened to the correct torque at the time and that's probably contributing to the leak.
So, I'm going over my service records to see when that might have been and we suspect it was when the heater bypass valve was replaced (by a non-Saab specialist) in June 2019, which other than the evaporator being replaced in July 2019 was the last most recent service involving anything removed/replaced. The tech said the TB is back by the firewall, so that makes some sense (I'm still getting to know the anatomy/layout of the engine bay....).
(Funny thing is I brought it to a Saab Indy in July 2019 - who replaced the evaporator and did some other work - but didn't notice the clamp being out-of-position, but maybe he wasn't looking closely in that area).
He is recommending that I not take any chances and to replace the TB with an OEM part (which I liked hearing that he respected not going aftermarket unlike the guy who replaced the bypass valve) instead of just replacing the gasket. And I'm totally okay with that - he said he wants to do the job right which is totally my way of thinking.
After talking with him and me explaining parts sourcing (ORIO/EEuroparts, etc.), he told me to purchase the TB myself and bring it back in when I have it.
I have no issues with spending the money and getting it done right, and I thought I'd put up a post just to see if anyone had any feedback one way or the other? I also would be interested if anyone would recommend anything else be done that makes sense to do "while you're at it".
EDIT: In the WIS, it says that after re-fitting, the limp home mode will be activated and so after fitting, turn on the engine and "reset diagnostic codes" before physically resetting the solenoid - is that always the case and if so, does it require a TECH2?
TIA
