I sympathize with your recent adventure in Saabland. I recall the thermostat on my old Saab 900 that was right up there in front, which was actually on the back of the engine. I used to keep a gallon jug and a length of heater hose under the floor, among other tools. I could probably change a thermostat in under ten minutes, working like a mechanic at the Indianapolis 500 with a few basic tools. Pour the drained coolant back in and be back on the road. Sometimes the thermostat would fail open and sometimes closed, but always on the road. On my 9-5s, it seems the thermostats fail as it gets cold. So frozen fingers make the job more interesting along with not being able to see what you are doing and not having any room to do it. But I suppose the computer senses a failing thermostat before it sticks open or closed so I can always do the job at home now so that is progress. I always marvel at the crude thermostat construction that must not have changed in 90 years or more, there among all that high tech. Thanks for reminding us about this not-very-pleasant ritual of Saab ownership.
