I actually find it not too big of a chore. The hardest part is draining the coolant because the stopcock on the radiator is so hard to turn, even ignoring that it is a pain to access. It always feels like it will break off! WD40 as suggested by Anders helps but it is never easy! Removing and reinstalling the tsat cover is more or less just having the right combo of swivels and extensions handy. Same for the temp sensor. At least when these tstats fail, it usually seems to be the safe way. On c900, it could stick either way and you could overheat the engine with not much warning, so they were definitely a wear item on those cars, ie to change every couple years as a precaution. I worry less about them in the 9-5.
