Catalytic converter failure

The car is 2001 Griffin bought new. 16.000 km. on the odometer. Ran perfectly until now. Last week suddenly check engine light came on while driving. There were no abnormal symptoms whatsoever. No hesitation, no stalling, no limp mode, nothing out of the ordinary. Took it immediately to the dealer. The error code returned by the diagnostic tool pointed to a catalytic converter malfunction, which, the dealer said, was probably due to bad gas. He erased the code and advised me to top the tank with the different brand of gas he recommended and wait to see if it made a difference. I did so and about 100 km. later the light came on again. This time I took the car to a different dealer and they made the same diagnosis: catalytic converter problem! Recommended that I replace the stupid thing (which is by the way quite expensive here, about $1.500, excluding service charges)and since they didn't have the necessary parts in stock, advised me not to drive the car till they obtained them which could take up to two months! Since the car was out of warranty (a 16.000 km.old 2001 Saab!) I said I would decide later, and now after about 200 km. and four days later the check engine light remains off, the car runs as new and I don't know what to do. Does my continuing driving the car could cause some other damage to the engine? The old adage "if it ain't broke don't fix it" comes to mind and I would be grateful if somebody among you could point me to the right direction to take.
Many thanks beforehand,
E.Serter
