Mat, Being a transplanted Mancunian living In Canada I always remember as a kid seeing old SAABs' running around Wythenshawe and thinking what a strange looking car they were, but low and behold 25 years later I am on my forth SAAB and still having mixed feelings.
Yes, some of the materials on my 2001 9-5 Aero are rather cheap in looks and feel but other things are wonderful, I drive a manual gearbox and I cannot say I notice any vibrations to speak of, the car is amazingly quick once you are in second gear, and it handle quite well for its size.
I did drive the BMW 530i and 540i, and also the Merc C32 AMG and they are both excellent cars but the 530i was $67500.(CDN) the 540i was $76000. and they C32 was $71000. I paid approx $56000 for my Aero which I thought was fairly expensive (at first) for what I was getting, but after comparing all the bells and whistles I thought the Saab was the better deal.
But I agree with you that it is hard to beat the feel and quality construction of a 5 series or an E class (or C32 in this case)but the cost here in Canada makes it hard to justify the extra $11500. minimum.
Cheers, Manumad
