Bill: Hope you don't mind a little critical thinking on this, but you sound all over the map on what to do. You indicated that your preference for the 9-5 was based on easy to drive smooth, yet damed the so called "slushbox" which I can assure you is anything but slush. Depending on what country you live in can make a huge difference in deciding what to do. Buying a used anything, then modifying it is a financial downfall compared to buying a new something and keeping it relatively stock, and having a dealer service organization you can depend on to supply parts and service. Here in the US, any of the aftermarket ECU mods depend on you shipping your ECU to them first for modification, and in the event that your car needs that component serviced, you are without wheels for some period of time. Usually, they have to go back to England, Sweden, or Switzerland to get serviced. Is this what you want?
The Aero is a pretty quick car as it is delivered from the factory, and while I count myself among those who say you can never have too much horsepower, the fact is the chassis will limit you at the top end of the HP scale. I drive an 02 Aero automatic, and can assure you that on the highway, this car is deceptively fast. The car is quiet and smooth, and if you think about it for a minute, when the only sensation you feel is G forces pushing you back, it does not feel the same as when you hear an engine winding out, exhaust noise, wind noise etc. The Aero really hauls ass, and the 00-01 were pretty darn close to the 02. I have not tried the Sentronic button shift yet, but quite frankly, the sport mode on the auto in my opinion is a better way to get a fast downshift, as well as quick throttle response.
You will end up spending more modifying a base model to bring it up to Aero specs, and when you are done with it( meaning-time to sell), you will have a hybrid.
If you can find a leftover 02 Aero, that will probably cost you a lot less than a new 03,so unless the paddle buttons, and a compass on your mirror( for when Onstar can't tell you where you are) are deal breakers, take a look at that.
Good luck
