I am a new owner of a 2002 Aero. Some of the concerns you stated are true, but many were remedied in the 2002 improvements.
1. Road noise is present, but it is not intrusive. The Aero has a sweet engine sound, and the stereo, even at mild levels, takes care of most road noise.
2. Torque steer is also minimal. It is mildly present at VERY aggresive acceleration, but normal everyday driving is smooth and fun.
3. I have an automatic and would highly recommend it. Very smooth and responsive. The 2003's have a manumatic auto which will give a little manual feel. There have been some concerns about a "rubbery" shifter feel on manual trannys. You should judge for yourself.
4. Depreciation has always been a big concern with Saab. The incentives and lease deals are awesome and definitely take the sting out of initial depreciation. I leased my Aero to avoid some of the problems. Some lease deals actually work out better than financing, if you can afford the buyout at the end.
5. No problems with my headlights, but it is a new car and I do not have the xenons.
Other concerns - Cupholders do suck, but this is a minor complaint.
Glove box is huge and storage is not an issue for me.
Brake dust is bad, but EBC greenpads help. It is no worse than most competitors.
I live in Las Vegas, and my A/C cooling has been incredible. No complaints.
Also, no rattles, etc, but again my car is fairly new.
Scheduled maintenance is free for 30,000 miles. Beyond that, you may incur higher costs simply because it is European luxury car.

I LOVE my Aero. Looked at all of the competition, and it can't be beat. Price, ride, interior, exclusivity, reliability, safety, and fun factor were simply too much to pass up. Good luck with your purchase. You won't regret buying an Aero.
