The Di system is a Engineering Marvel. Technology wise, there is not much to compare to it. Its a frontier technology that is cheap and very effective compared to other technologies such as the smallest guided missile used by the US for war applications on aircraft. ONE of those boys cost the tax payer a million dollars. The Di is simple to diagnose and replace. No buried distributor to pull or timing marks to deal with ... just 4 screws and a well designed electrical connector to pull and a march to your trunk to retrieve the new unit. Your average person can deal with this if stranded. This DI system is part of what makes it possible for your Saab motor to get 30 or better MPG and fly like a bat out of hell. Period
As far as safety issue, I don't think it can be classified in a class all by its self as if what you state, would put every system in any car at fault that would fail and cause the car to shut off suddenly.
Understand ... Saab is a expensive car. Its not a Honda or a Ford and cant be compared.
If you cant afford it ...bail out of it and buy a economy car. Based on better than 30 years of hands on experience ...Id have to say Saab has a better product than Mercedes from about 1998 onward. Saab could do without the 94 - 97 900 NG and all v6 motors as well as TCS in the 9000. Big mistakes in my book.
I personally look forward to the day of the REAL PEOPLES car. One made with stainless or non corrosive metal and bolts. Serviceable, practical and economical. The technology is here and so is the material ....where to hell is the car? We take what big business shoves down our throat. So swallow and make that fat car payment sucker. Hope it don't fall apart before you get it paid for. The engineers have it all figured out for ya. This is blunt but gets to the point as I see it.
