Dick,
I agree on the durability factor. Too bad they didnt make a bilateral symetric DI system so if one system fails, the other is there to hold it up and each unit is replaceable seperately.
The point I was trying to make on the modular DI is you dont have a seperate coil or coil wire or other related parts to deal with. Multi componet systems can be a bear to deal with in cases of intermitant failure. The good side to multi componet systems is if 1 coil fails for one of the 4 cylinders ...Ya still have 3 cylinders to get ya home. A lower price for the part is also a consideration as it doesnt use the Ionization of combustion for a input ...simplicty and lacking features for better control of the combustion process. Its probally a trade off for a little more power and mileage.
Im with ya on the longivity factor. When I was a kid ... one of my greatest fears was to be a million miles from home and have the car break down. It still is except I know how to deal with it now.
All the years I have worked on Saab, I can only recall "3" cases of bad motor. Two were pitifull case of neglect in the oil change department and the other was a 87 900T that APC and the overboost protection switch was disabled ...And god knows how much boost was being pumped out of that turbo because of some fool, max adjusted the wastegate. When I shifted to second gear ... I could hear the turbo needle bang the stop all the way to the right on the gauage! The reason the 87 was here is because of massive smoke out the tail pipe. Inspection concluded all 4 pistons had melted tops.
I agree over 10 years of Di cassette production ...It falls short in reliability area. The good news is if your DI equipted Saab cuts off and wont start ...Its probally the DI cassette.Simple to replace and easy to diagnose. I cant get a good fix on failure rate as the mileage of failure is scattered and the data is contaminated with the old style DI cassette that had the built in wire harness. I think it would be wise to keep a spare in the trunk. This way if you break down ... You can be up and running in minutes. No tow truck needed :-)
