Compared to anything that you have to replace because of failure on a Saab, the battery might be the cheapest thing going. It is false economy to keep batteries for a long time. The costs of a failed or weak battery can be quite high, more than the cost issue. Batteries do not cost much.
There is more and more stuff crammed in the engine bay. Batteries are running much hotter than years ago. This heat greatly increases the loss of water from the battery. If you don't top it up, the tops of the cells will be exposed and deposits will bridge the plates. These can become conductive and will act as points of ignition. We had a rash of batteries exploding a year or two back with the NG900's. I was wondering if these battery covers were some attempt to contain battery explosions so that acid would not go as far under the hood.
Stop and go city driving in the summer will be the worst. The cover might limit the heat soak from this if the conditions are short term. Maybe the covers are cosmetic.
