my '72 beetle had the battery under the rear seat. It exploded once, incredibly no real damage to the seat.
I used to work at a car dealership on the used car lot. One of my Saturday morning tasks was to make sure all the cars would start. If a battery was weak we'd just hook up the battery charger to it so that it could be started 2-3 times during the day, enough to sell the car (ah, the 'honesty' of car dealers, eh?). Anyway, the proper way to charge the battery was to put the charger on "12" and let it charge for hours. Of course, this is a car lot, very busy, so.....we'd put the charger on "24" (volts I think) and only charge the battery for 1/2 hour or so. One morning I hooked the battery charger up to a car, set it on 24, and went off to do something else. I got sidetracked and forgot all about the battery. I remembered about 3 hours later, thinking "oh my God" and ran over to the car. I could see the battery water *bubbling* inside!! As soon as I disconnected the negative the battery exploded in my face (since I was a stupid kid I was leaning over the battery). BOOM!!!Incredibly, not one drop of acid hit my face or body, nor did any of the plastic shrapnel that went flying everywhere. I'm either blessed or very lucky, that could have been nasty. Of course the d*ckhead used car mgr was more concerned about the engine bay..."go rinse that motor off real good". No wonder I hate dealerships, I pretty much saw it all there.
