ACC too hot even at 58F

We have a 2001 9-5 wagon. In winter, even if we set the temp to the lowest (58F) it's still too warm for us. We hate warm dry air wafting across our faces until some blessed little thermostat in some crevice in the ceiling panel finally decides it's up to temperature. So on a cold winter night every few minutes we switch the ACC off, but then have cold outside air delivered onto the drivers feet. Or we open a window ... it drives us nuts. Give us manual climate control any day, this thing is way to "smart".
Besides "recalibrating" the ACC which we've done dozens of times to little effect, the dealer says there is nothing that can be done (also, there are no fault codes). Does anyone have any ideas? Is the thermostat too slow? Can we override the "A" part of ACC?
Many thanks
Martin Braid
