Hi,

I do not believe there is any way 0W-30 and 0W-40 have same longevity.

One of the reasons why synthetic oil has to be eventually changed is
metal particles held in suspension. These particles are by-products
of wear.

0W-30 and 0W-40 differ in wear in two cases. One case has been
mentioned by you several times. 0W-40 provides better wear protection
for bearings. So, given identical driving conditions, 0W-30 will have
to hold in suspension more metal particles resulting from inferior
protection of bearings.

Second, 0W-30 flows better during cold starts. So, amount of metal
particles which need to be held in suspension due to metal to metal
contact while oil is in sump is greater for 0W-40 which does not flow
as well when cold.

So ... for long trips where the effects of metal to metal contact
during cold starts is minimal, 0W-40 should have better longevity,
and for short trips where the effects of metal to metal contact during
cold starts is more pronounced, the advantage of 0W-40 should be largely
neutralized.

So, in many ways a "Time For Service" indicator tuned for 0W-40 is
NOT appropriate for regular oil changes with 0W-30. Therefore, either
9-3SS owners have to be told to change their own oil with 0W-40,
buy 0W-40 and insist dealer use 0W-40 instead of store brand for oil
changes, OR they should be told to not trust "Time For Service"
indicator.

You cannot say 0W-40 protects bearings better and say 0W-40 and
0W-30 have identical longevity when one of the factors affecting longevity
is amount of metal particles which have to be held in suspension.

thanks

Jae
