Hey Greg,
I like to quantify things. So, I cannot let a statement like
"oil life monitor is essentially just set for an oil of the quality of
Mobil 1" go without trying to rationalize it.
If oil life monitor is a precise measurement of when service is
required, the difference in wear between 0W-40 and 0W-30 would be
significant enough that inaccuracy would be evident.
However, there is no way oil life monitor can account for variations
in temperature, variations in clearances between engine parts, etc etc.
So, engineers basically resort to the old "safety factor" which makes
"Time for Service" message appear when oil still is very usable. I'll
wager that even if user fills up with Mobil 1 (Saab) 0W-30 and only
changes oil when "Time for Service" message shows on SID, oil analysis
of spent oil will show plenty of useful life left in it.
If *I* were driving a 9-3SS, I would not exceed 10,000 drain interval
no matter what oil life monitor tells me because of all the safety factors
which the engineers must have built into their calculations.
thanks
Jae
