Greg, I believe I recall that you live in the Denver area ? I'm in Westminster. I went shopping for a 9^5 three yrs. ago, and ended up buying a 1 yr old program car from the dealer in Ft Collins, as i was able to bargain a price lower by almost $ 2K than the Denver and Boulder dealer.
I have apparently been pretty lucky with car purchases over the years, because prior to the 9^5, I had purchased 7 new cars (5 japanese), and had to only twice visit the dealer for warranty repair. One of these visits was for my 1986 Saab 9000, to repair an oil leak. I do all my own services, and dislike taking a car to a repair shop for any reason.
But my good fortune ended with my 1999 9^5, as I had to have what I consider to be extensive warranty work performed (see previous angry postings). As I work in the tech center, and by reputation, Shaw was the logical site for repair. These guys were very good to me, and fixed everything that needed fixing, even thought I had not bought the car there, and I informed them that I self maintain. I did let them replace the auto trans fluid, and spent some time getting to know the head of the service dept. But I felt I received the same level of service as someone who bought the car there, and also had it serviced there. This included a free 9^3 loaner for 7 days.
So hope that helps, and also if are willing to spend the time in negotiating, I think Shaw will get real close to competitiors prices, they have a whole lot more cars on the lot than when I bought mine.
As to the DI ? , my understanding is that the new 9^3 SS recieves a simpler, and historically more reliable ignition system, but the 9^5 continues to employ the capacitive discharge design. As some posters suggest, learn to accept it as a "throw away" item, and/or carry a spare DI in the trunk. Maybe as you negotiate your purchase you insist that part of the deal is a spare DI, custom mounted in the trunk. Seems from postings that many DIs seem to give up somewhere past 50k miles, mine did at 59K stranding me and family near Wolf Creek pass.
Other than the DI (IMO a design boo-boo) I find the car as being very robust and reliable, and with reasonable maintenance expect it to be so for many years.
