Greg, let me clarify - the 1986 9000 I owned never broke down, and was extremely reliable, up until 220 K when it was destroyed in a crash. In fact a lot of this car was original - alternator, starter, suspension, turbo, most of the exhaust, ac , etc. The 1999 9^5 had numerous problems, but they were all fixed under warranty - and I've learned from this BB that the early production 1999 9^5 did have issues that have been corrected in later production.
I find the Saabs only a bit more costly to operate than my Japanese autos, but this is probably because I service them myself,(I find them overall easier to work on than Japanese or American cars) and get parts from aftermarket sources like eeuro. The Saabs are a lot more fun to drive, roomier, and safer as well. With the deals to be had on the current models, I think the Saab is a real bargain, and that the overall reliability of the 9^5 is very good and getting better.
