I bought an extended warranty once -and only once. It was an aftermarket warranty through the dealer. On the few occasions I would have needed it, the the parts either weren't covered, or the deductible was so high that little benefit was gained.
The old saying goes "you only get what you pay for". I add "if you're lucky". The policies are calculated to be profitable to the insurer. So, from a purely financial standpoint, you'd likely be better off without them. But, there's the intangible, like peace of mind. If the extra confidence you get from having the warranty, or insurance policy is worth it. But it's funny. I've seen guys who make regular pilgrimages to Vegas to gamble $thousands, yet can't stand the thought that their car might break down and require an expensive repair. You've just got to appreciate the irony of it.
Myself, I don't gamble. Won't even buy a lottery ticket. But I'm willing to buy a used car without a warranty. Part of the reason is that I won't buy a car model that has an infamous record of reliability. The other factor is that if I can figure out what's wrong, and have a shop manual, I can usually fix the problem myself. If it turns out to be beyond my ability, I'm unlikely to be bamboozled by dealer service departments, or independent mechanics because I have a sense of what the job entails.
I guess my extended warranty amounted to me purchasing the shop manual.
